Christophe Maire's Atlantic Ventures invests in Likemind, Written by Nina Fowler on 4. September 2012

Atlantic Ventures, co-founded by prominent angel investor Christophe Maire, is reported to have acquired shares in two new Berlin companies preparing to launch their first mobile apps – Likemind and Toast.

LikeMind ToastLikemind, still under development for a release on iOS, is a mobile application “to discover likeminded people in your area and directly jump into a conversation with them”. German news site Deutsche Startups reported last week that Atlantic Ventures holds about 41 per cent shares in Likemind. The timing of the investment is unclear.

Toast, one of the companies to join SoundCloud and Mozilla in new Berlin tech hub The Factory, is an “iPhone app to make your wishes come true” – from BuddyBeers co-founders Benedict Bingler and Travis J Todd. The jobs page for Toast states the team is “rethinking the way people give gifts to each other through their mobiles”.

Atlantic Ventures is now reported, by Deutsche Startups, to hold about three per cent of Toast, alongside other investors including Michael Hohaus, Rolf Johannes and JMES Investments (JMES partner Simon Schaefer is a driving force behind The Factory).

Berlin- and Zurich-based Atlantic Ventures‘ current portfolio includes txtr (with Maire as founder and CEO), SoundCloud, Amen, Gidsy, Monoqi, Readmill, EyeEm and Phonedeck. Past investments include mapping company Gate5 (founded by Maire, sold to Nokia in 2008) and “German Facebook” StudiVZ.

The company’s CrunchBase profile states it prefers to invest early at seed or pre-seed stage; its website highlights a focus on consumer internet, “passion for product” and “user experience innovation”.
