Rocket Internet's FoodPanda announces new app and South American expansion Written by Michelle Kuepper on 4. March 2013

Less than a month after launching in 12 new countries comes the announcement that FoodPanda, Rocket Internet’s online food delivery platform, has launched its first mobile app. The app is available both for iOS and Android. Coinciding with the launch is news that FoodPanda has expanded into two new countries – Argentina and Venezuela, fitting with its plan on targeting emerging markets.

This is the typical model of Rocket Internet, which tends to launch copycats of successful businesses in emerging markets. For now, the FoodPanda app will be available in 14 markets – India, Indonesia, Malaysia, Pakistan, Singapore, Taiwan, Thailand, Vietnam, Ghana, Ivory Coast, Kenya, Morocco, Senegal and Russia. Within the next two weeks the app will also be available in Brazil, Chile, Colombia, Mexico, Hungary and Poland.
The app works by allowing users to mark their area and lists the closest restaurants. After placing their order, users receive a notification with their order details and anticipated delivery time.
Since launching in 2012, FoodPanda has expanded to 25 countries. It is available in Argentina, Indonesia, India, Malaysia, Pakistan, Singapore, Thailand, Taiwan, Vietnam, Venezuela, Brazil, Chile, Colombia, Mexico, Peru, Hungary, Poland, Russia, Ukraine, Ivory Coast, Ghana, Kenya, Morocco, Nigeria and Senegal.
According to the press release, this means that FoodPanda and its other brand names in different markets now “targets a total population of three billion people…making it the online food delivery service with the widest geographical reach.” The platform is apparently in cooperation with more than 10,000 restaurants.
FoodPanda is currently seeking funding to aid its rapid expansion.
