Frestyl – meet the "three music nerds" building Berlin’s gig discovery app Written by Michelle Kuepper on 4. September 2013

What could be a better time to launch a Berlin-based music event discovery app than the middle of Berlin Music Week? Going live today in collaboration with the First We Take Berlin festival, Frestyl is a free iOS app that pairs users’ tastes with music events by offering recommendations from “music experts” and locals.

Founded in 2013 by Emanuela Tumolo, Johanna Brewer and Arianna Bassoli (pictured above from left to right), the startup took part in last year’s Berlin Startupbootcamp accelerator programme.

Along with event advice, Frestyl shows music lovers nearby concerts and parties, lets them track shows they want to see and access special offers. The app uses a crowd-ranking algorithm combined with tips from music experts to find what’s trending locally.

Frestyl also offers promoters, event organisers and venues a way to attract attendees to events. Gig organisers can manage and push events by creating calendars, special offers and events pages, and receive analytics on event attendees. At the moment, the service is only available in Berlin. An Android app is in the works and will be launched in October this year.

Brewer said in a release: “We are three music nerds and we’ve always been the friends that everyone calls for tips about the best concerts tonight. We built frestyl so they would stop asking us”.

Frestyl finds itself in a crowded market – there are plenty of apps that offer event discovery (including Berlin-based Vamos), while services such as YPlan and Tab Ticketbroker provide discovery as well as ticketing platform. In an interview in December last year, the Frestyl founders said they consider Songkick, the world’s largest concert database, their biggest rival.
