An exit for Berlin – GroupM acquires advertising platform Plista Written by Michelle Kuepper on 7. January 2014

Berlin-based digital advertising service Plista today announced it has been acquired by GroupM, the media investment management arm of UK advertising giant WPP Plc. The terms of the deal have not been revealed.

Plista cofounder and CEO Dominik Matyka

Founded in 2008, Plista specialises in connecting advertisers and publishers via its data-driven content and advertising platform.

At the moment, it operates in Germany, Switzerland and Austria – where it claims it is the leading player in its field. With the acquisition it now looks like an expansion is on the cards. GroupM COO Rudiger Wanck said: “It is our ambition to develop plista from a multi-market operation into a global player; business in the DACH region will therefore continue as usual.”

As for GroupM and WPP, the acquisition fits with the group’s aim of building its network in fast-growth markets and bolstering its digital media capabilities.

Plista now employs around 100 people in its Berlin office and has attracted clients like Coca-Cola, Volkswagen and Sony. It received $3.8m in funding to date, its investors include business angels Christophe Maire and Peter Schuepbach, High-Tech Gründerfonds, Crédit Agricole Private Equity, NWZ publishing house invest and DuMont Venture.
