Groupon, the movie: who wants to see Alec Baldwin play Oli Samwer? Written by Marguerite Imbert on 21. February 2012

Alec Baldwin

The leaked email from Groupon HQ that we shared with you last week garnered a series of fervent reactions from the business community both here in Germany and in the US. In the HackerNews forum one reader linked to a particularly relevant cinematic analogy.
Word is that certain individuals in the community are preparing a documentary on the Berlin startup scene. Could we see scenes reminiscent of the ones immortalised by Alec Baldwin in Glen Garry Glen Ross?
A Rolex-watch wearing, smooth-talking Baldwin yells at a room full of aging real estate salesmen until, in a final gesture, he pulls out a set of brass balls on chain and leaves. The character Blake, almost earning Baldwin an Oscar, is an intimidation machine that some would call a “well-meditated salesman,” and reminded at least one of our readers (and us) of some key players in this discussion. Here’s the drama, to give you a visual analog.

Scared of losing your job? Listen to Alec Baldwin

Alec Baldwin

1.Put that coffee down, [Levine.] Coffee’s for closers only.
2. The good news is you’re fired. The bad news is you’ve got, all of you’ve got, just one week to regain your jobs. Starting with tonight.
3. First prize is a Cadillac El Dorado. Second prize is a set of steak knives. Third prize is you’re fired.
4. The leads are weak? You’re weak.
5. You drove a Hyundai to get here tonight. I drove an 80,000 dollar BMW. That’s my name.
6. Only one thing in this life: Get them to sign on the line which is dotted.
7. ABC: Always Be Closing.
8. You think this is abuse? If you don’t like it, leave.
9. It takes brass balls.
10. You know what you’ll be saying, once you’re losers sitting around in a bar: “Oh yeah, I used to be a salesmen. It’s a tough racket.”
