HTW Berlin wins EU award for commitment to increasing women in tech Written by Charmaine Li on 8. November 2013

HTW Berlin – the German capital’s largest university of applied sciences – was announced as the first-ever Digital Impact Organisation of the Year at the ICT 2013 event in Vilnius, Lithuania.

The award, which is under the patronage of VP of the EU Commission Neelie Kroes this year, aims to recognise the contributions and achievements of an organisation committed to increasing the number of girls and women in the digital sector in Europe.

In 2009, HTW Berlin introduced, a women-only bachelor programme (Frauenstudiengang Informatik und Wirtschaft) that accepts 40 applicants each year in hopes of increasing women leadership roles in the tech sector.

“Tomorrow’s world will be led by digital technology, and having digital skills will unlock a goldmine of opportunities. And yet traditionally women are not attracted to digital jobs. That is why I am so happy to congratulate these talented women and girls who have achieved great things in ICT and I hope they go on to inspire more women to explore the digital sector,” said Kroes.

Another finalist hailing from Berlin is non-profit network Berlin Geekettes, which launched their first all-women one-day mini summit for students and recent graduates last week.
