Infographic: Berlin's startup hype in numbers Written by Charmaine Li on 22. April 2013

Only about 4.5 per cent of the overall number of new companies founded in Berlin in 2012 are IT startups, according to a report released by the Statistical Office of Berlin-Brandenburg. This is surprisingly low given the massive hype surrounding the city’s tech startup scene.

But what exactly constitutes an IT or tech startup? A representative from Berlin’s Senate Administration for the Economy, Technology and Research said the numbers might not be so clear-cut: for example some internet startups, such as Zalando, will be classified under retail.

Despite seemingly low numbers, Berlin’s buzz shows no sign of waning as low rents, a hip visage and SoundCloud continue to be fodder for the press. But it’s not all butterflies and rainbows, recent skepticism about the relevancy of the city’s startups on the international stage and lack of large-scale exits has sparked heated discussions.

Last year, the German capital only ranked #15 on Startup Genome’s Top 20 Startup Ecosystems lagging behind hubs such as Silicon Valley, Tel Aviv, Seattle and Moscow.
