Are you a fan of looping your LOLs? Today Berlin-based Loopcam – a predecessor to Twitter’s Vine app – has released version 2.0 of its GIF-animating app with a stack of new features, including a rewarding system dubbed Loop Score and updated user profiles.
Goal: “being the hub of all animated LOL on the internet”
The latest release focuses heavily on upping the social experience on the platform with the roll-out of a new comments and mentions feature (similar to Instagram’s) and a new “share view”. Additionally, the startup has brought a gamification edge to the app with Loop Score, which allows users to generate points based on engagement.
“The amount of animated loops, followed people and LOL’d loops is counted and sent through a homebrewed algorithm,” Loopcam CEO Tor Rauden Källstigen told us.
Loopcam, launched in July 2011, is backed by a line of well-known European investors and entrepreneurs including Christophe Maire (Txtr), Zoe Adamovicz (Xyologic) and Alexander Ljung (SoundCloud).
The burgeoning short-form video market
Earlier this year, Twitter debuted its own looping video maker Vine – showing striking similarities in branding and functionality to Loopcam.
Since then, the space has been heating up with Vine topping the US’ app store list of free iPhone apps and filter-enabled video clip sharing service Cinemagram launching an Android version of its app yesterday. Currently, both Loopcam and Vine are only available on iOS but a recent Vine job posting reveals that an Android app may be coming soon.
Loopcam has also grown its team (pictured above) with two new members on board, including a developer who previously worked for Mozilla.
