Yesterday, British Princesses Eugenie and Beatrice spent the first day of their German promo tour checking out Berlin startups Zalando, payango, Bigpoint and SoundCloud.
The princesses are on their GREAT Britain MINI tour – so named because they are travelling around the country in a UK emblazoned Mini Cooper, in which they drove through the Brandenburg Gate yesterday. Within the next 12 months, the sisters will visit all 16 German states as part of the tour. The British Embassy press release claims that the aim of the trip is to strengthen ties between Germany and the UK, particularly between the tech and fashion industries.
Eugenie and Beatrice’s visit to Zalando was a show of support for the British internet sector; they met the UK team working in the eCommerce giant’s Berlin office. Zalando has already set up in London’s Tech City – a cluster of more than 1200 tech, digital and creative firms in the capital.
They also talked to the teams from Payango, SoundCloud and Bigpoint, startups that are active in the UK, to discuss trends in eCommerce, expansion strategies and the advantages of Berlin and London as technology hubs.
Visiting startups was not the only stop on the royal tour; the princesses also checked out fashion fair Bread and Butter, making the most of the Fashion Week festivities taking place in Berlin this week.
Not exactly a royal fanfare
The publicity surrounding the trip, which is being funded by the Duke of York, Beatrice and Eugenie’s father, seems decidedly low-key. The level of promotion has been perplexingly minimal for what is essentially a publicity tour for their country, with only a handful of press present at the kick-off, and only small mention of the visit in the German media, with the British Embassy releasing the sparsest of press releases as their part of the bargain.
Zalando even requested to us that there be no pre-publicity of the event for fear of a media scrum. Surely that’s the point of a Royal Visit? Unless the girls just fancied a Germany vacation in a fancy car?
