Rhapsody acquires Napster International Service in Germany and UK Written by Charmaine Li on 26. January 2012

Rhapsody Napster

Online music subscription service Rhapsody has today announced its acquisition of Napster International, paving the way for the company to officially enter Germany and the U.K.

Rhapsody will operate under the Napster brand, after company studies showed the name is widely recognized in Germany and the U.K.

As the largest music-streaming service in the U.S, Napster is looking to double its more than one million subscribers upon entering the European market.

The service is set to intensify competition with London-based Spotify – which has 2.5 million international paying users. And in Germany it could fill the space left by the departure of Grooveshark.

Napster provides more than 14 million tracks on 70 different devices. Subscribers to the service in Europe will be moved to Rhapsody’s infrastructure in March.
