Tech Open Air Berlin, the tech event with a twist happening this summer in the city has confirmed that its has opened its doors to crowdfunding today, as well as settling on a concrete venue in the über-cool riverside Kater Holzig.

TOA Berlin, a one-day networking event and the brainchild of local startup luminaries Lutz Villalba-Adorno and Nikolas Woischnik will eschew Kickstarter and opt instead for KissKissBankBank to attempt to raise €20,000 in funds in 30 days.

A bit Burning Man, a dash of SXSW, and a generous topping of Berlin cool

Villalba-Adorno said: “It has to be bold and grassroots, creative and amazing. Something that only the summer in Berlin can bring to people. Something that will feed participants with inspiration, and energy for the rest of the year.

Speaking of the funding campaign he said: “It is essential for us to check whether we are just romantic dreamers – or if there is an appetite for a Burning Man-like gathering of the tech startup community at large. Not only the founders, developers, or those financing the ecosystem, but also the artists, designers, musicians that fuel the whole scene.”

Kater Holzig wins over Mauerpark

Hot Berlin venue Kater Holzig has been confirmed as the host of the event on 23 August – although Berlin’s famous fleamarket Mauerpark was originally mooted. The festival will consist of a one-day networking event combined with a series of satellite goings-on on the same evening and subsequent day. The former soap factory in Kreuzberg has become a new cool playground on the banks of the Spree, run by the former owners of infamous party venue Bar 25

Attendees will be able to wander round the complex – attend workshops, network and enjoy happenings designed by the startup and the artistic communities, under the banner “learning from peers and enjoying”.
