Russian VKontakte owner donates $1m to Wikipedia at DLD Written by Charmaine Li on 24. January 2012

The founder of Russia’s largest social network VKontakte today pledged a whopping $1 million donation to Wikipedia.
Pavel Durov, 27, proclaimed his long-time support of the not-for-profit organisation while onstage at the Digital Life Design (DLD) conference in Munich.
Much like a Facebook for Russia, Durov started VKontakte five years ago, and now enjoys 33 million daily unique visitors, 17 million monthly active users, and a total of 169 million registered users.
Wikipedia founder Jimmy Wales welcomed the generous donation. “I wish I could give away $1 million when I was 27,” he joked.
Wikipedia has so far raised a record $20 million from last year’s fundraising efforts.
