Silicon Valley tech recruitment firm VonChurch sets up European HQ in Berlin Written by Nina Fowler on 10. January 2013

One way to assess Berlin’s health as a startup city – or the quality of its hype – is by the startup support firms moving in. Recent arrivals include M&A advisors GP Bullhound and Torch, and Ballou PR, with a new office led by founder Colette Ballou.

Tech recruitment firm VonChurch is another newcomer. The firm officially opened its new European office in Mitte on Monday, adding to offices in San Francisco and New York. The new office, manned by four people at first, will be led by Jeremy Del-Guidici (ex- NJF Europe).

VonChurch’s clients in the US include Konami, PopCap, Disney, Rockstar Games and Sony. While there’s little info available on clients in Europe, the firm aims to work with the top 10 companies in digital entertainment (which could mean anything from Spotify to Tweek to SponsorPay) across the major startup hubs in Europe.

Mapping the European recruitment market

“For the last three months, we have been mapping the European market, analysing thousands of startups, every founder, every round of funding, every community of developers,” Del-Guidici said.

Cities catching his eye outside Berlin include Helsinki, Stockholm, Tallinn and Moscow.

The social gaming industry in Russia is of particular interest: “Over 60 per cent of live technical roles in the Russian digital entertainment startup community we found related to social network or mobile-based games,” he explained. “It’s one of few areas in games, geographically, where significant growth is predicted.”

VonChurch considered a few other spots for its first international office – Berlin won out for its central location, cheap rent and relatively open market for tech recruitment. VonChurch is also tentatively planning to open an office in Tel Aviv in January 2014.

For other tech recruitment firms, VonChurch’s arrival spells fresh competition; for Berlin, it’s a sign winter blues are still some time away.
