I am Angelika Gaughan and here's how I came to Berlin Written by Christine G. Coester on 30. November 2016

When Berlin Calls – Angelika Gaughan of foodora
“I have to say I was never one of those people who was like, ‘I have to go to Berlin… That’s really where I want to go.’ It just kind of happened because there are so many opportunities here. I didn’t know so much about the city itself, so for me it was a bit of a blank coming here.
I grew up in Dusseldorf and moved away for studying in Maastricht. I studied economics and business economics.
I don’t think any other city in Germany has the same amount of startups and young companies as we have in Berlin.
I did my last internship in kind of a startup… and I didn’t really see myself going to a corporate job yet. I couldn’t see myself wearing a suit or in that kind of environment, so I intentionally did look for younger companies and startups.
It was really interesting. I started out right in HR at foodora with a lot of daily business tasks. We get a lot of emails, I helped with the payroll and now I started to go into the full-time position. I have my own projects, I have to design my own processes and have a small team that I can lead. It’s a lot more challenging and a lot more responsibility.
I can tell it is going to be a lot of work, but really good for me.
And I really like that you have good relationships within your team. We all feel like friends. Having that next to having a challenging job and a lot of impact and responsibility is why I chose to work in a startup, rather than a big company.”
