Berlin-based social gaming company Wooga plans to double its portfolio of Facebook and mobile games in the next year (currently at six titles), starting with the release of existing titles Diamond Dash for Android and Monster World for iOS.
Wooga is one of the most popular social gaming companies in the world behind Zynga, and is vying with King.com for the top spot in Europe. So far, King.com has the lead – at just over 11 million daily active users compared to Wooga’s 7.64 million.
Today’s press release outlines a clear strategy for the company over the next year – dedicate half its 200 plus team to mobile, both bringing games over and starting to design specifically for mobile.
Releasing Diamond Dash, Wooga’s best-known title, for Android is a no-brainer. Since its release for Facebook in March 2011 and for iOS one year ago, over 70 million people have played with 20 million of those downloading on iPhone and iPad. It will also be Wooga’s first release for Android.
Monster World has attracted 45 million players over two years and is not yet available specifically for mobile.
Going mobile bumps up revenue per user, Wooga CEO and founder Jens Begemann told Forbes. Bringing mobile and social together seems to be the key – Diamond Dash mobile players who log in with Facebook to play with friends are eight times more likely to spend money than those who don’t.
“Our vision at Wooga is to makes games for everyone and with the growing popularity of mobile platforms we have an opportunity to bring our games to a bigger audience than ever before,” Begemann said. “With unrivaled social features and a focus on connectivity, I believe Wooga has what it takes to define the social gaming experience on mobile.”
Wooga, founded in 2009, is backed by $32.2 million from Highland Capital Partners, Tenaya Capital, Balderton Capital and HV Holtzbrinck Ventures. The new releases are expected this autumn.
