Big-time footwear and fashion website Zalando, have proven they’re also a shoe-in for offline competition after taking out the Startup Cup football tournament on the weekend.
Zalando trumped food-delivery service Lieferheld 4-2 in a close finish, after an even 1-1 resulted in a nail-biting penalty shoot-out. Sponsorpay missed out on bronze after taking a beating by Möbel Profi 1-6.
The event, hosted by Lieferheld, consisted of 12 Berlin startup companies and 96 players from startups such as Soundcloud, eDarling, and GetYourGuide.
Startup Cup is made up of short-sharp back-to back 15 minute games. Zalando walked out with the trophy prize of a fussball table, Lieferheld scored an Xbox, and third-prize winners Möbel Profi were awarded a top-quality soccer ball to improve on their moves for next time around.
“It’s just a cool networking event; it’s cool to get to know each other in the scene without talking about online marketing. So, it’s just nice to be here to meet the other faces and I think everyone had a good time and we got a good response,” said Lieferheld tournament organiser Saman Hashemian.
